What Are Crystal Pleasure Wands?
Today we’re taking a very NSFW turn from our usual content and discussing a rising trend that I’ve been seeing in both the New Age AND mainstream communities.
Crystal pleasure wands are booming in popularity right now and fall into the category of crystal healing and sexual pleasure, which is a great two birds one stone scenario, especially for those trying to heal and work through sexual trauma.
This topic came to my attention recently, when I noticed a full double page spread in the Herald Sun newspaper (mainstream daily newspaper in Melbourne). I was firstly excited to see such amazing open mindedness from a right-wing reporting paper but that excitement soon turned to unease when I read they were recommending Jade as a sex toy material which has a lot of potential for danger!
In this post, I’ll aim to cover the safety of crystal sex toys and how to choose the best one for you, as well as the healing benefits and potential magical uses for these unusual products.
What is a Crystal Wand?
Crystal wands are natural alternatives to silicone and rubber sex toys. They are often shaped like a dildo, yoni egg or anal plug but made from crystals such as Rose Quartz and aim to satisfy both a physical and a spiritual need.
Safety First
POROSITY
Any product that is going to be inserted into your body needs to be CLEAN and non-porous.
The problem noted above with Jade, is not only that it’s extremely expensive, it’s also a semi-porous crystal, which means, no matter how well you clean it, it can still carry and breed bacteria which you DO NOT want to introduce into your body. Therefore, I recommend you stay away from all Jade sex toys AND steer clear of shops that promote this product for internal use.
Another common material in crystal pleasure wands is Black Obsidian. One of my favourite crystals of all time, but definitely not something I’d imagine placing inside me. Black obsidian is a form of lava glass and whilst standard glass dildos are totally safe, I’m not convinced on those made with Obsidian. Not only is the porosity undetermined and can change dependent on the presence of water in the Lava, where the Obsidian comes from can make a difference, so there’s no real knowing if it is harbouring dangerous bacteria or not.
CHIPS & CRACKS
When standard glass sex toys are manufactured, they undergo a process called annealing to ensure it is strong and won’t break as easily as ordinary glass. I cannot find any information on Black Obsidian pleasure wands going through this process and from personal use with this stone, it can chip and crack VERY easily and is incredibly sharp. Not something I’d like going anywhere near my lady parts.
WATER SAFE
It’s less common to see, but any crystal that is NOT water safe such as Selenite, Fluorite, Hematite, Celestite, Lepidolite to name a few. You can see a full list here
TOXICITY
Lastly, the use of toxic crystals is a definite no-go zone. There are A LOT of crystals that are considered unsafe for making crystal elixirs (to drink) and this would also include being unsafe for insertion into your body in any way. Moonstone is one of these as it contains aluminium which is still debated on whether it is toxic to ingest and I have seen MANY websites that are selling Moonstone crystal pleasure wands. Be sure to research very thoroughly before deciding to insert this crystal into your body.

So which Crystal Pleasure Wands Can I Use?
Phew, we’ve got the hard stuff out of the way, now let’s get down ‘n’ dirty with the products I absolutely recommend.
Any pleasure wands made from the Quartz family of crystals. This includes, Rose quartz, Smokey Quartz, Amethyst, Citrine and Tourmalinated quartz (keeping in mind the Tourmaline also includes aluminium so may pose a toxicity risk if exposed, use at your own discretion).
These materials are SAFE and non-porous. I do recommend checking them before each use for any cracks or chips which are still possible and could do some damage both physically through cuts or scratches and by harbouring bacteria. It may be common sense, but make sure to ALWAYS wash your crystal sex toys before and after each use, & before switching holes or people, wash with warm soapy water.

ROSE QUARTZ

AMETHYST
Amethyst is a very calming crystal and is perfect for stress release. Combine amethyst with an orgasm and you have a very relaxing end to stressful day at work. Always do your research on the crystal properties, both energetically and physically before using them inside your body.
Try to purchase from ethical suppliers who source their crystals with minimal harm to people, animals and our planet.
Do not presume a product is safe, because it is being sold in a shop. This is currently an unregulated field.
