The 12 Zodiac Signs As Harry Potter Characters

** EDIT: June 2024**
This blog post was originally written in mid 2019, before JKR came out as a TERF with her disgusting anti-trans commentary.
There will be no further Harry Potter content created for this blog, or with anything that I do.
I am choosing to keep this one public because I have received so many messages from folks who said this helped them understand astrology more than anything else.
This is for THOSE people only. People who grew up with HP and can no longer enjoy the fandom because of what JKR has done, but perhaps want to put their extensive knowledge of the fandom to good use in understanding a complicated system. - Hana

I feel like I was BORN to write this blog post. Harry Potter meets Astrology? Hell Yeah!
Now this list has been compiled with a thorough knowledge of the characters and their personality traits and does not represent their character birth dates as per JK Rowling (I will include this at the end of the blog post for interests sake).

Now, we shall begin a little differently to my other posts in this series (see Disney Villains and Disney Princesses here) and we are going to start with the Hogwarts houses.
I’m sure you’ve noticed there are 4 of them, and they each are associated with an element in very much the same way the zodiac is split into 4 elements as well.

So as you can see from the above graphic, JK Rowling has commented on this topic and stated the element for each house, which I agree with and think works well, HOWEVER, because the elements and the house characteristics are slightly different to a traditional elemental meaning in Astrology, I have re-jigged this a little here.

The reasons for the change is this;

Gryffindor values courage, bravery, nerve, and chivalry. Gryffindor's mascot is the lion so of course it makes sense that Leo is included. Sagittarius is chivalrous and brave, often shown by their willingness to explore the world without fear and Cancer has been included because when necessary they will fight to protect the ones they love and can be extremely courageous.

Hufflepuff values hard work, patience, justice, and loyalty. Is there a more patient sign than that of Taurus or Pisces? Pisces, being the last in the zodiac are used to waiting around, and can use their incredible imagination to fill in the time. Taurus is often seen as slow moving, when they’re really just stable and patient and Libra can be such a cuddly sign, reliant on their intense one on one relationships to get through life and they LOVE some justice in their life. The Hufflepuff common room is also near the kitchen so we KNOW Taurus will be there.

Ravenclaw values intelligence, learning, wisdom and wit. Aquarius is undoubtedly clever and wise, often seen as those with old souls who know more than they should. Virgo values intelligence and learning, they have a pure thirst for knowledge, and then we have Aries who wants to win and always wants to be first. They will motivate themselves to learn everything in class so they can ace their OWLs and be the first to score 100% (if that’s even possible).

Slytherin values ambition, cunning, leadership, and resourcefulness. Obviously Capricorn is the most ambitious of the signs, and will stop at nothing to reach the top. Gemini has always been known to have a cunning streak, they are wildly clever and being an air sign, they can be a tad unfeeling. Lastly, Scorpios are extremely resourceful, they do rule the 8th house of resources in astrology after all!

Now, let’s get into the characters and their signs!
Not all of the characters correctly correlate with their house above, but this is all just an exercise in fun and is in no way canon.
Let’s not forget that everyone has a rising and a moon sign to consider too!

Voldemort - my dudes, this guy definitely has some issues when it comes to death and that might be because Aries are the babies of the zodiac. They are the first sign, and like their position in the wheel, they love to be first at everything. Voldemort was determined to be the first Wizard to beat death but we all know how that turned out.

Aries are also great at creating start ups, being entrepreneurs and motivating others to take action. Voldemort definitely created what I would term a successful start up with his company of death eaters. They even had a snazzy logo and some pretty high tech communication devices. Aries is nothing if not in front of the trends.

Ron is a typical Taurus. A little bit slow, a little bit lazy. He doesn’t want to do his charms homework, he doesn’t want to go to the library and all he can really think about is butterbeer and chocolate frogs. Taurus is the sign that provides calm and stability and we see that with what Ron contributes to the friendship trio. He doesn’t cause too much of a stir and is the loyal companion, providing lots of moral support.

Snape is two faced and very good at hiding his other side, to the point where you’re not entirely sure which is his true face. He is adaptable and able to modify his tactics and behaviours to suit the crowd he’s rolling with at the time. Gemini, being ruled by Mercury (the planet of the mind) means Snape is clever and quick thinking. His quick thinking also helps to navigate dicey discussions of why he was somewhere or why he did something. At their core though, Gemini’s are very romantic and just want to be loved, as Snape did with Lily.

Always.

Neville is a sensitive friend but will stand up for what is right when necessary. Cancer’s are fiercely protective when it comes down to it and they will defend themselves or their friends to the death if they need to. We see this fierceness emerge over time with Neville, especially nearing the end during the battle of Hogwarts when he does what he needs to do to try and save his friends and the world as he knows it.

Cancer also likes stability, so they’re not often the one at the forefront of a rebellion but they’ll follow along if it seems like the right thing to do.

Harry is not my favourite character, even if he is the main character. I’ve placed him here as a Leo because there is literally no character development for him in the entire series which kind of seems fitting for a Leo. They don’t really change, they’re a fixed sign after all but also just really comfortable in themselves, and who they are and often don’t see a need to do anything outside of their usual them-ness.

Harry also becomes a leader, even when he isn’t seeking it out, which is SUCH a Leo thing to do. Be the one in the spotlight no matter what. Some Leo’s thrive on this, and others despise it, but they’ll often have the attention of others regardless.

Hermione is SUCH a Virgo! She is witty, and whip sharp when it comes to books and information. She is the smartest muggle born Witch many have encountered don’t you know!

She is also quite prim and proper, and likes to play by the rules. She’s not particularly adept at divination because you have to FEEL it and it can’t really be learnt in a book and Virgo’s do have a tendency to push down their emotions for more logical matters.
Virgo is also a super helpful sign! Hermione is constantly trying to help Ron and Harry, and often believes by giving an answer, she is helping others learn too (and maybe not realising they’re annoyed by it).

Dolores Umbridge is sickly sweet. We see her constantly dressed in perfect pink, and she is the epitome of toxic femininity. Libra can often have a very definitive aesthetic. You will never find a Libra dressed shabbily! They are sticklers for the rules, and love the justice system. For them it is all about balance and fairness which we see in Umbridge, even if her morality meter is a little skewed.

Draco is shown as the evil bad boy of the series right from the start. Not only is he in Slytherin, but his Dad is a Death Eater (we assume) and just like Scorpio, he gets a bad rap. Scorpio’s aren’t all bad, but they do have a tendency for the darker things in life. There is often an occult allure, as they love to root out secrets and find out the hidden things. There is also a love of power which is often unnoticed and we see that with Draco. The best part about Scorpio’s though is their ability to change and transform. They understand that to grow can be painful and they’re willing to do the work to change themselves and sometimes their entire lives.

Hagrid is definitely larger than life and whilst we don’t see him out and about exploring cultures like most presume of a Sagittarian, I can definitely imagine him firing up his flying motorbike to go save some poor monster in a far off forest somewhere. He is unafraid and willing to go places others most certainly are not and he doesn’t judge anyone or any-creature on looks alone.

He is also a true optimist, overly honest and a bit of an over-sharer. It can be hard to get some Sagittarians to be quiet, and we can absolutely see that in some of Hagrids iconic scenes that result in a “I should not ‘av said that!”

Lucius is extremely power and money hungry. His ambition to succeed outweighs even his love for his son, which we can see in the story when Narcissa (his wife) is the one to go behind everyones back to look after Draco. Lucius has impossibly high standards and honestly, it’s no wonder Draco turned out the way he did with Lucius as his father!

Capricorns are represented by the sea-goat. A mythical creature that shows their practicality and their willingness to dive deep into watery unknowns. They’re also the masters of navigating difficult terrains. Ever seen a mountain goat climb a sheer cliff? That’s exactly what a Capricorn does, leaving their competitors behind on a dusty trail whilst they take the short cut to success, regardless of the fall.

Dumbledore is detached and aloof. We see him as this father figure, that is mostly absent when Harry truly needs him. He is supportive, but not truly emotionally involved (at least not on the surface level).
Aquarians have brilliant minds, that can get wound up in even the most insane conspiracy theories. Dumbledore however, uses this brilliance to unravel the seemingly impossible saga of the horcruxes and he get's further than anyone else before him.

Luna is such a Pisces. She is imaginative and often seen as someone who is ‘away with the fairies’. She doesn’t let anyones opinion of her change her positive outlook on life and persists on seeing the best in people, even if they steal her shoes and hide them in strange places.

Let’s all be more like Luna!
