Do Love Spells Work?
Love spells are often performed by people wanting to attract a lover or sexual partner but can also be used to improve a current, even long term relationship by focusing on improving communication and harmony and maybe even reinvigorating passion.
So, do love spells really work? How do we do love spells safely and is it even ethical to do a love spell?
In this post we will go over the effects of love spells & rituals, have a brief discussion on sex magic as a sub-genre of love magic and the ethics of performing any form of love magick.
What is a Love Spell?
Love spells are any ritual with the intention of increasing, creating or attracting love to you. This could include a spell to increase your sense of self-love or magick to encourage a particular person to come to you. Love magick is one of the most popular expressions of Witchcraft and is certainly one of the more sought out services.
Everybody wants to be loved right?
Some forms of questionable love magick include people trying to make someone fall in love with them against their will, or to prevent their partner from straying too far. These types of love spell often dip into blood magic which is considered extremely powerful and potentially dangerous. We’ll chat about the ethics of this in a moment too.
What is Sex Magick?
Sex magick is a much more powerful form of magick in general. Some ways it can be performed is by creating a sigil for the specific person you wish to attract, or even just for the idea of self love. Painting this on your body with pen, ink, body fluids (whatever floats your boat) and then using the power of an orgasm and your focus to ‘charge’ this sigil and bring it to fruition.
This can be done with or without a sexual partner but be prepared for very intense results with this type of working.
Do Love Spells Really Work?
Yes, love spells really fo work. But you need to be careful about what you’re asking for. The best way to do a love spell is with the idea of attracting the right type of love for you.
If you get too specific “I want a proposal!”, you may get it from a different source than you were expecting (the drunk guy at a bar for example)!
I personally only recommend using self-love spells for attracting someone to you, the best way to bring in a relationship, is to use the law of attraction by increasing how you love yourself and showing the universe what it should bring to you.
We also need to remember that everyone has free will, which can affect the outcome of your spell.
Any magic being done to remove someone’s free will is considered unethical.
What About Ethics?
Ethics, oh yes, we do need to consider those. Love pells have a particularly nasty rap of bad ethical practices. You will need to use your own moral compass on what works for you, but try to remember that consent is the right thing to have first.
We’re all very clear on the lines of consent when it comes to sex, but with magick and love spells that line gets blurred.
We shouldn’t try to force someone into something they’ve not chosen or consented to which is why it’s better (and safer) to aim for self love, or increased passion, or romance rather than “I want X to be my life partner”, you feel me?
The same goes for trying to keep a partner from straying. These sorts of spells may begin by wrapping an item of clothing or even using hair from their partner with some love inducing crystals or rose essential oil which can be pretty harmless.
When desperate however, some Witches have been known to turn to blood magic for this one which can include feeding their partner food laced with their own blood (sometimes menstrual blood) which starts to get a bit icky, and into some really dicey legal situations. Not only are we toying with their partners free will, but there are some pretty serious health risks in this style of working.
Also, if you’re using magick to trap somebody, it can backfire and you need to ask yourself if you truly want to be with someone who needs magick to stay with you.
If you REALLY want to try blood magic, I recommend blending it with candle magic, such as dressing the candle with your blood, and intent, and go from there.
What Is a Safe Love Spell or Ritual To Try?
Here are some safe and fun love spells to try and improve your own love life;
Choose your colours wisely!
Colours play a big part in all magick and for love you want to use either pink, red and to a lesser extent green (for the heart chakra).
Pink and (and sometimes green) is to attract true love, self-love, friendship, companionship and romance.
Red is to attract sex, lust, passion and libido.
I always suggest creating your own spells, incantations and rituals as they are more powerful that way, but if you need a guide here are some simple ideas to get you started.
Candle Magick Spell for True Love
Take a small, pink candle and carve a sigil for or the word ‘true love’ into it. Now dress the candle (coat it) in coconut oil and roll it in dried or fresh pink rose petals whilst thinking on how you will feel when you have found your true love.
Place the candle, on a fire proof plate (if it is hand dipped you may need to melt the bottom first so it stands up). You can sprinkle some rose petals and lavender around the plate and place 4 rose quartz or rhodochrosite stones around the candle in the directions of north, south, east and west.
If you feel safer drawing a circle for your spell, you can use the petals, salt or simply your energy to cast a circle before you begin.
Now, light the candle and say “I deserve love and receive it abundantly” whilst vividly imagining yourself already in a true love style relationship. Make it realistic, imagine your love coming home after work and giving you a kiss, or you climbing into bed with them after a long day. Really FEEL it!
Let the candle burn out, releasing your intent to the Universe.
Now, the key here is to forget about the ritual. Don’t focus on it, let the Universe work it’s magic and be patient. Trust that it’s happening in the background.
The best time of day for this type of spell is at dawn, if you can be bothered to wake that early, it’s totally not necessary. The best day of the week for it is a Friday as it is ruled by Venus, the planet of Love which is much easier to fit into your schedule I’m sure.
If you can wait till the moon is in Libra or when the sun is transiting your 7th house in your birth chart, even better! But again, not necessary if the timing doesn’t work for you.
Create a Love Altar
A Love Altar is another option, best for the busy witch who doesn’t have time to be casting circles and dressing candles.
The best place for this is on the bedside table, on the side of the bed you don’t sleep on. This is called creating space for the person you’re looking to attract.
Pop a pink and a red candle, some rose petals or violets, some pink/red/green crystals on the altar and write any words or place images of how you picture the perfect relationship to be. Some people write a letter from their ideal future self, talking all about how amazing their relationship is.
Tip: Avoid using specifics like hair colour and defining physical features. Don’t presume to know better than the universe and this language can reduce effectiveness.
You could use a figure candle, or place a statue of a couple embracing or something to represent Aphrodite. Whatever feels right to YOU. If you can diffuse some rose or neroli oils here, that’s even better and you could sprinkle some cinnamon or red chilli flakes to speed it up too.
Then leave it be! Refresh it when it needs it, light a candle when you remember and speak any affirmations over it when it feels right.
Just remember, the best way to start attracting love to you is by working on your self love first. You will always attract the type of love you think you deserve.
Improve your self worth and your love life will follow.
Try to think how you would feel if a certain spell was worked on you, before doing it to another person. In the end, it’s up to you to work however you feel comfortable, I’m not here to gatekeep.
